Receipts support
Every receipt for the family, kept in one place.
Receipts is an iPhone app for families who keep track of household and business expenses together. Scan paper receipts, add photos and PDFs, or forward emailed receipts. The app reads the date, amount and VAT on your iPhone, files each receipt under a category or business, and shows where the money goes. Everyone in the family sees the receipts their role allows, on their own iPhone, even offline.
Getting started
Receipts works with an account on the Receipts server. Open Receipts and choose Create account. Then either:
- Start a new family. Choose New family, give the family a name if you like, enter your name, email and a password (at least 10 characters), and tap Create family. You become the family's admin. To bring the others in, create an invite code for each of them in Settings → Family → Members & invites.
- Join your family. Ask your family's admin for an invite code (a code works once, for 7 days). Choose Invite code, enter the code, your name, email and a password (at least 10 characters), and tap Join family.
Then add receipts: tap + on the Receipts tab to scan, take a photo, pick from your photo library or Files, or type one in. You can also share PDFs and photos into Receipts from other apps.
Just looking? Tap Try the demo on the sign-in screen: it opens an example family, and nothing is saved or sent anywhere.
Common questions
How do I forward receipts by email?
A family admin first connects a mailbox in Settings → Email accounts (Microsoft 365, or another email account using IMAP). After that, everyone finds their own receipts address in Settings → Email receipts. Forward receipts there, or give the address to shops. Mail from approved senders becomes a receipt straight away; anything else waits in the Inbox until you approve it, and you can choose to remember the sender. Forwards from your own email address count as yours.
Who can see my receipts?
Admins and family editors see all of the family's receipts. Members see only their own. Nobody outside your family can see them.
How do I lock the app with Face ID?
Turn on Settings → Security → Lock with Face ID (or Touch ID or passcode, depending on your iPhone). Receipts then asks when you open it and when you come back to it. Face ID is handled by iOS: the app never sees your face data.
Are my receipts read by an online service?
No. The text of photos, scans, PDFs and emails is read on your iPhone. If something was missed, the receipt waits under Needs details in the Inbox.
Why wasn't a photo or file added?
Receipts checks pictures on your iPhone before adding them. If Sensitive Content Warning or Communication Safety is turned on in your iPhone's settings (Settings → Privacy & Security → Sensitive Content Warning, or Screen Time → Communication Safety), Apple's on-device check looks for nudity, and Receipts doesn't add a picture or PDF it flags; the app tells you when that happens. Emailed receipts are checked the same way when your iPhone reads them (up to ten pictures and PDFs per email), and a flagged attachment is removed from our server. If neither setting is on, pictures aren't checked for nudity. A file that doesn't look like a receipt (no readable text, amount or date) is only a warning: you can keep it.
A page is sideways
The app turns photos, scans and PDF pages upright on your iPhone when it reads them. If it got one wrong, open the file on the receipt and tap Rotate (the turning arrow at the top) until it is upright; for a PDF, Rotate turns the page you are looking at. Members can turn the files of their own receipts; admins and editors any. The turn is saved with the receipt and shows on your family's phones; the file itself isn't changed, so exports and shared files are the original.
Checking a bank statement
Receipts can read a bank statement to find receipts you're missing. Tap + on the Receipts tab and choose Check a bank statement, use Settings → Data → Bank statements, or share the statement from your banking app to Receipts. It reads PDF, CSV, OFX, QFX and QIF statements. The statement stays on your iPhone: it's never uploaded, and Receipts deletes its copy once it has been read. If your family has a business (or the statement doesn't show its currency), it asks the first time whether the account is personal or a business's and remembers the answer on that iPhone. Receipts that match get a “matched” mark, which only you and your family's admins see; if a match is in another currency, you confirm it and the amount your bank charged is saved on the receipt. Missing receipts appear in the Inbox under Missing receipts: for a business account every payment out that has no receipt, for a personal account only payments at shops you already have receipts from. Scan or enter the receipt, or tap Not needed and choose why (Bank fee, Transfer, No receipt available or Other reason). Members can match only their own receipts, because that's all their iPhone has. To undo a match, open the receipt and tap Unmatch (the person who matched it, or an admin); the transaction goes back to Missing receipts on the iPhone that read the statement.
Checking a statement again
Your iPhone keeps all of a statement's transactions (you don't see them in the app), so Receipts checks them again by itself when you add receipts: a payment can then match a new receipt, or become a missing receipt once you have receipts from that shop. To do it yourself, tap Check again under Missing receipts in the Inbox, or open a statement in Settings → Data → Bank statements. There you can also change whether an account is personal or a business's (Receipts then checks its statements again) and put back a transaction you marked Not needed. Remove statement data from this iPhone deletes all of it.
How do I export my receipts?
Go to Settings → Data → Export, choose the dates and which receipts (all, personal, all businesses or one business), and share a CSV file (for spreadsheets and accountants) or a PDF report. Turn on Include originals to get a zip file with the CSV, the PDF and the original photos, scans and PDFs, named so each row points to its files: share it, save it to Files, or email it. To export particular receipts, tap Select on the Receipts list, pick them and tap Export. Any original can be shared from its receipt.
I deleted a receipt by mistake
Deleted receipts stay in the Bin for 7 days: go to Settings → Data → Bin (or the menu on the Receipts list), select it and tap Restore. After 7 days, or when you choose Delete now in the Bin, the receipt and its originals are deleted for good, from the server and from your family's devices; an emailed receipt's email stays in your own mailbox.
Notifications
Receipts can tell you when an emailed receipt arrives, when an email waits for your approval, and (admins) when the family's mailbox needs attention. Allow notifications when the app asks, or later: tap your name at the top of Settings, then Notifications (it asks iOS, or opens the iPhone's notification settings for Receipts if you said no there). Notifications only say “New receipt” and similar; never the sender, subject or amount. The app icon shows how many items wait in your Inbox (turn Badges off in the iPhone's notification settings for Receipts to hide it).
Can I sign in without typing my password?
Yes. When you sign in, your iPhone offers to save the password in Passwords (or your password manager) and fills it in next time. You can also add a passkey, so you sign in without typing your password (with Face ID or Touch ID): tap your name at the top of Settings, then Passkeys. Your password keeps working as well, and the app asks for it when you add a passkey. Changing your password keeps your passkeys, so if someone else may know your password, change it and check the passkeys on your page too, removing any you don't recognise. If an admin resets your password, your passkeys are removed; once you have chosen your new password, the app offers to create a new one. If you remove a passkey in Receipts, also delete it in the Passwords app.
What about other currencies?
Each receipt keeps its own currency. Totals are shown in your currency (Settings → tap your name → Your currency), estimated with the European Central Bank's rate on the receipt date. If you know what your bank actually charged, enter it on the receipt and it is used instead.
I forgot my password
Ask your family admin: they can set a temporary password for you, and the app asks you to choose a new one when you sign in. Nobody can do that for a family's only admin, so if you are one, make a second admin in Settings → Family → Members & invites while you can sign in. If you are locked out anyway, email us at support@skaap.ie from your account's email address and we'll help you get back in.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings → Account → Delete account and enter your password. Your name and email are removed and your devices are signed out. The receipts you added stay with your family, shown as “Former member”. If you are the family's last admin, either make someone else admin first, or delete the whole family: type the family's name and your password, and everything the family has on the server is deleted. You can export first. See the privacy policy for what is stored and for how long.
The app says it needs an update
Very old versions of the app stop working when the server needs a newer one. Tap Update Receipts to open the App Store (or TestFlight) and update; your receipts are safe on the server and on your iPhone.
Signing out on a shared iPhone
Sign out keeps this iPhone's copy of your receipts for your next sign-in. Choose “Sign out and remove data from this iPhone” to remove it straight away.
